about

The first two verses are from a future perspective, the third verse is from a present day perspective and the last verse is from a present day perspective thinking about the future

lyrics

I got a letter in the mail from my dad today
it was all about how he regrets what he said
and I wrote him its more about what you didn't
and I said "I don't hate you we just can't connect"
and that's the sad truth and it'll always be
I'll only feel close with him
when he drinks
and we listen to "Sympathy"
but The Rolling Stones have an end to their discography

I got a letter in the mail from my mom today
it was all about how she was doing okay
Its been years since they've been together
but my mom and dad are happier separate
and I told them once
that I'd be ok with a divorce
because I hate seeing them both
faking their love so forced
and I've never even seen my parents kiss
and I probably never will

I know that some people have it much worse
and I'm kind of fortunate my parents aren't divorced
but this relationship they've displayed for me
is not a loving one and it's plain to see
so maybe one day these letters will come
and I'll read them on my front porch
handing them to my child to read
and she'll ask me what it was like growing up

and this will be the hardest thing to do
because I don't want to lie to my child
because I'm not sure if my parents loved each other
and my kid won't comprehend how I could never love her mother
and that won't be the case because I'll never stop loving
and I'll always help them up if they're trying to recover
and even though I'll never understand my parents relationship with each other
I can say with smile on my face they never let my childhood go to waste
